Identity theft is a growing crime, and the crimes that accompany this type of theft is becoming more varied and more popular. So who are the biggest targets for identity theft? Who is at a bigger risk? Could it be you?

If you are wondering who are targets for identity theft, then the answer is simple - everyone! Everyone and anyone that has personal data and information can have it stolen, and it is whether or not you choose to take a few basic steps to protect yourself that changes the chances you have of becoming a target.

If you are free and easy with who you give information to, and by information, I mean information that is of a personal nature, for example your name, address, date of birth and things like that, then you are of an increased risk. If you are joined up with many social networking sites that are available on the internet, then you may find yourself entering details that are personal and therefore you are at a greater risk. If you talk to people on there that you don’t already know, and answer questions about yourself and your life, then you are also at a higher risk.

There are certain age groups that have been found to be at a higher risk of being identity theft and these are those that are in between the ages of 18 and 24. Also, people that earn a salary of in excess of $75,000 have also found to be more likely to be hit by this type of crime. Does this mean that these groups of people are not more secure with their personal information or does it just mean that people are tending to target these groups more? Maybe those that are younger aren’t as “wise” as those that are slightly older and do not think that identity theft can happen to them. If they did think this, they would be wrong. It can happen to anyone, and it does.

If you use shared computers, for example, within a library, Internet cafe or even one that is shared with you and your flat mates, then you are also at a higher risk of becoming a victim of identity theft. In today’s busy lifestyles, people may often forget to sign out of certain websites, or leave the computer for a few moments to do something else. It is in moments like this that identity thieves take their chances, and very often succeed, and you may not know until you find yourself in debt with things you haven’t purchased! Also, people that don’t use well known, secure sites can find themselves becoming a target for identity theft, and you should make sure you check this before entering any payment details on any websites.

So many people are becoming a target for identity theft mainly because of our busy schedule we don’t always notice things as we should. People walking around in high streets or stores may become a victim of pickpocketers. Once the wallet has been stolen, and the money emptied, the information that are your personal details could be passed on to others or even used by the thief themselves, and used to perform identity theft.

Everyone is in danger of becoming a victim for identity theft, and you need to protect yourself to ensure this doesn’t happen to you. Just remember, it doesn’t matter who you are, or where you are from, you have an identity and it can be stolen!
